We’ve all been there. We’re doing a quick image search for a school project or maybe for that perfect .gif to express a specific feeling on twitter, and something unexpected pops up. Sometimes it is harmless, but as is often the case, it’s difficult to erase those images from our mind once they’re there.

Protecting your family, and yourself, from unwanted explicit content in Google searches is possible through Google SafeSearch. While no search filter is perfect, SafeSearch may help reduce the likelihood that inappropriate content might appear.

Setting it Up

Turning SafeSearch on in the Chrome app on both desktop and mobile platforms requires you to sign in to your Google account, so make sure you’ve done that first.

1. In the search bar at the top of the browser, type “google.com/preferences.” This will open up the Google Search Settings page.
2. From the Search Settings page, scroll down to the heading labeled “SafeSearch Filters” and check the box beside “Turn On SafeSearch.”
3. Next, click the blue text reading “Lock SafeSearch.” This will give you the option of using your Gmail username and password to ensure that nobody else can deactivate the safe search feature.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the blue “Save” button. It’s as easy as that! Make sure you repeat this process for all accounts and browsers on your computer.
